On the red carpet
Pisando la alfombra roja
My Auntie Effie lived in Newport, and she knitted this Welsh lady for me when I was very young and living in London. In those days we used to visit Wales once a year and it seemed like a fairyland…I never thought that one day I would be living here. This little lady was always very precious to me, and I brought her with me when I moved to Wales.
I was really enjoying working at Y Ffwrnes Theatre in Llanelli when Lockdown happened. My last shift there was a Bollywood film premier. It was very exciting, and I even met the actor who had recently played Aladdin in the Disney movie. At the end of the evening, I couldn’t resist standing on the red carpet!
Mi tía Effie vivía en Newport y me tejió esta dama galesa cuando yo era muy joven y vivía en Londres. En aquella época solíamos visitar Gales una vez al año y me parecía como el país de las hadas… Nunca pensé que un día viviría aquí. Esta damita siempre fue muy valiosa para mí, y me la traje conmigo cuando me mudé a Gales.
Estaba disfrutando mucho mi trabajo en el Teatro Y Ffwrnes de Llanelli cuando se produjo el encerramiento por la pandemia. Mi último turno allí fue el estreno de una película de Bollywood. Fue muy emocionante, e incluso conocí al actor que había interpretado recientemente a Aladino en la película de Disney. Al final de la velada, ¡no pude resistirme a pisar la alfombra roja!

At the beginning of Lockdown we were clapping for the NHS and children were drawing rainbows and putting them in the windows. I put all my soft toys in our front windows, upstairs and downstairs, to cheer up any passing children. How could a young child understand what was going on in the world?
When restrictions eased, we were able to visit our local Wetland Centre again. There was also Avian flu at that time, so the flamingos were all crammed together into one shed instead of being outside as usual. They were so noisy, so smelly and so pink, they just made me laugh. A great distraction from the world outside.
Al principio del encerramiento aplaudíamos al NHS y los niños dibujaban arcos iris y los ponían en las ventanas. Puse todos mis peluches en las ventanas de nuestra casa, arriba y abajo, para animar a los niños que pasaban. ¿Cómo puede un niño pequeño entender lo que está pasando en el mundo?
Cuando las restricciones disminuyeron, pudimos volver a visitar el Wetland Centre (Centro Humedal) cerca de nosotros. También había gripe aviar en ese momento, por lo cual los flamencos estaban todos apiñados en un cobertizo en lugar de estar al aire libre como es habitual. Estaban tan ruidosos, tan olorosos y tan rosados que me hicieron reír. Una gran distracción del mundo exterior.

In ten years’ time, I will have had my hip operation and will be as good as new and no longer in pain.
Dentro de diez años me habrán operado de la cadera y estaré como nueva y sin dolores.
I don’t think I realised how Welsh my family life was until I was much older. Our life revolved around the Welsh Chapel in London. I absorbed a lot of Welsh language as I took part in musical performances, Eisteddfodau and religious services, but didn’t really learn to speak it fluently. I had an interest in music and dance from an early age and this has continued until the present day. After many years of teaching languages, I moved to Wales, where I presumed I would soon become fluent in Welsh. I am still working at it!
I was really enjoying working at a theatre and seeing all the performances when Covid struck.
Lockdown was very strange… I became obsessed with jigsaws, house plants and growing vegetables in the garden, and this kept me sane.
My teacher training included a course in Multicultural Studies which inspired me to start working with refugees, teaching English. I am now a volunteer with a Multicultural group and love to meet people from different countries and to help them settle here in Wales. I experienced some culture shock just moving from England to Wales, but some people have travelled much further.
I recently had a diagnosis of arthritis and feel gloomy about the future… part of my identity as someone who enjoys dancing has gone. I can only hope that after an operation my life will improve again.
Creo que no me di cuenta de lo galesa que era mi vida familiar hasta que fui mucho más mayor. Nuestra vida giraba en torno a la capilla galesa de Londres. Absorbí una gran cantidad de la lengua galesa, ya que participaba en actuaciones musicales, en el Eisteddfod y en servicios religiosos, pero no aprendí a hablarlo con fluidez. Desde una edad muy temprana, me interesé por la música y la danza y esto ha continuado hasta el día de hoy. Después de muchos años enseñando idiomas, me trasladé a Gales, donde imaginaba que pronto llegaría a dominar el galés. ¡Todavía estoy trabajando en ello!
Disfrutaba mucho de mi trabajo en un teatro y solía ver todas las representaciones cuando Covid nos golpeó.
El encerramiento fue muy extraño… Me obsesioné con los rompecabezas, las plantas interiores y el cultivo de verduras en el jardín, y esto me mantuvo cuerda.
Mi formación como profesora incluía un curso de estudios multiculturales que me inspiró para empezar a trabajar con refugiados, enseñando inglés. Ahora soy voluntaria de un grupo multicultural y me encanta conocer a gente de diferentes países y ayudarles a establecerse aquí en Gales. Experimenté un cierto choque cultural al trasladarme de Inglaterra a Gales, pero algunas personas han viajado mucho más lejos.
Recientemente, me han diagnosticado artritis y me siento desanimada cuando pienso en el futuro… parte de mi identidad como persona que disfruta bailar ha desaparecido. Solamente puedo esperar que después de una operación, mi vida vuelva a mejorar.
