Emotional whisperings
in layers of memories

“My images explore and reflect upon human relations created by hazard or destiny and built through absences and uncertainties. They seek to understand and synthesise a sense of projection and their illusory nature in a symbolic reality trapped in the remains in emotional whisperings of layers of memories.”

Humberto Gatica was born and educated in Chile. He came to the UK as a refugee from the Chilean dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, where he was in prison for nine months. He has published two books of poetry: Ring y Otros Poemas (1980) and The Sand Garden (Hafan Books 2008). His poetry has been published in both print and digital magazines in Europe and the Americas, and also in anthologies such as Another Country: Haiku Poetry from Wales; Ventana Latina Third Anthology; and Barbed Wire Blossoms (The Museum of Haiku Literature Award Anthology 1992-2011). 

His images have been selected for group exhibitions, books, and magazines. He was part of the exhibition ‘Refugee and Renewal: Migration and British Art’, in the Royal West of England Academy (December 2019 – March 2020) and MOMA Machynlleth (March-June 2020). He lives in Swansea with his wife Gabriela.

“Mis imágenes exploran y reflexionan sobre las relaciones humanas creadas por el azar o el destino y construidas a través de ausencias e incertidumbres. Buscan comprender y sintetizar un sentido de proyección y su naturaleza ilusoria en una realidad simbólica atrapada en los restos de susurros emocionales en capas de memorias.”

Humberto Gatica nació y se educó en Chile. Llegó al Reino Unido como refugiado de la dictadura chilena de Augusto Pinochet, donde estuvo en prisión durante nueve meses. Ha publicado dos libros de poesía: Ring y Otros Poemas (1980) y The Sand Garden / El jardín de arena (Hafan Books, 2008). Su poesía se ha publicado en revistas impresas y digitales de Europa y las Américas, y también en antologías como Another Country: Haiku Poetry from Wales (Otro país: Poesía Haiku de Gales); Ventana Latina Third Anthology (Tercera Antología); y Barbed Wire Blossoms (Flores de alambre de púas) (El Museo de Literatura Haiku: Antología de Premios 1992-2011). 

Sus imágenes han sido seleccionadas para exposiciones colectivas, libros y revistas. Formó parte de la exposición “Refuge and Renewal: Migration and British Art” (“Refugio y renovación: La migración y el arte británico”), en la Royal West of England Academy (diciembre de 2019 – marzo de 2020) y en el MOMA Machynlleth, Gales (marzo-junio de 2020). Vive en Swansea con su esposa Gabriela.
